Methodology
This project is a response of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) on the need to formulate measures in addressing the effect of Climate Change to Philippine Fisheries Sector to ensure continued food production and security. The project is divided into 3 components, namely:
Component 1: Establishment of FishACT Portal
This component is the integration of various fisheries and environmental data collected over the past years (e.g. NSAP data, Regional Fisheries Profile), and climate data under one platform. The component does not intend to establish another fisheries database, rather, aims to bank on existing efforts that are relevant to CC.
Component 2: Development of Fisheries Vulnerability Assessment Tools and System (FishVOOLS)
This component aims to formulate methods to systematically conduct vulnerability assessment for fisheries and aquatic resources. This component will rely on the integrated data from the FishACT Portal to assess the level of exposure and sensitivity of the community and aquatic resources/environment concerned. Developed tools will be designed suited for commercial fisheries, coastal fisheries and aquaculture, inland fisheries and aquaculture, and mariculture areas.
Component 3: Assessment of Traditional Knowledge and Adaptation Measures (FishTRAK)
FishTRAK is designed to gather information and background on the observed impacts of climate change through time. It also aims to assess awareness of local communities to the existing and increasing problem in climate change; and to formulate possible adaptation strategies depending on the gathered information.
